The reunion dinner of the Chinese people

On the eve of the Chinese New Year

The eve of the Chinese New Year is an important day for all the Chinese people around the world. It is even more important than the first day of Chinese New Year. This is the time for all those living away from their parents to return to their home towns and villages where their parents are living. During the rest of the year the small towns and villages are deserted. But on the eve of Chinese New Year, the places are alive with people who have returned from big towns and cities to pay homage to their parents. They don't come alone; they bring their whole family along. The highlight of the evening is the reunion dinner. All the family members sit around a round table. The table is full of Chinese dishes. Each dish has its own significance. For instance, fish means wealth, and bamboo shoots mean advancement in one's career.

For those who live far away from their parents, this is the time to visit the old folks at home. They are old and fragile and they are expecting to see their children on this day.
